Phyllis Hawkins (Mull)

Phyllis K. Mull, 68, of Newton, died July 8, 2010, at her home in Newton.

Phyllis was born on Dec. 21, 1941. Her birth parents died within a year of each other, he in France in World War II and she in an automobile accident. This misfortune enabled her adoption by Kenneth and Clara Hawkins, and her arrival in Newton in 1946.
Phyllis was an artist. She went to college in Emporia, Manhattan and Bethel. She married Eugene C. Mull in September of 1962, who preceded her in death. Phyllis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Eagles Lodge, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. Her hobbies were animals, (all kinds, warm- and cold-blooded alike), flea markets and auctions. She was a homemaker until working outside of the home at various occupations, such as manager of Salvation Army,  ServiceMaster with her daughter, and operating MOM’s Maid Service. Following a stroke and heart attack, Phyllis worked at Dollar General and El Toro Restaurant.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Rachelle Oswald (Robert, son-in-law); grandchildren Stephanie and Patrick Oswald; her brother, John and sister-in-law, Nancy Hawkins, of Lebo; niece, Navonna of Emporia; aunt, Elizabeth Baker of Newton; brother-in-law, Robert Mull; and other nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Clara Hawkins; uncle, Robert Baker; husband, Eugene C. Mull in March of 2000; her son, Kenneth C. Mull in June of 2000; her in-laws, Harry and Emogene Mull; and brother in-laws, Steven and Richard Mull.
